Daughter of notorious East End hardman Lenny McLean reveals why he suffered violent rages

I recall an article on Lenny McLean in Fighting Arts International where the writer suggested that had Lenny been born in Okinawa he would have been regarded as a karate master. Lenny McLean's autobiography, titled The Guv'nor, written with Peter Gerrard, was published shortly before his death, and immediately occupied the number one position on the bestsellers' list. Bareknuckle boxer Lenny McLean gained his infamous reputation having taken part in thousands of fights, mixing with the criminal underworld and acting as a no-nonsense doorman.

Translating his reputation into a money making venture as a bouncer, McClean effectively ran security at many of the East End pubs. Naturally, he quickly became friends with the East End underworld element, acting as an enforcer in several circles. That work always comes with a price, and McClean found himself on the wrong end of a shotgun one evening while manning the door of a pub. While shot in the leg, he chased down the motorcycle-riding assailants nearly catching them. He then hailed a cab to the hospital where he walked himself into the emergency room. Unlicensed boxing matches became a favorite pastime in 1970s London, and by the time he finished his tour, McClean had somewhere north of 2,000 fights some say 4,000 under his belt, both in and out of the ring.

Let that sink in for a minute. Not your modern rules, padded gloves and ring-girls type fights. Street fights. The kind that leave you scarred internally and externally. McClean was a champion and now he was making money doing what he loved: hitting other people.

Upon his release, he became an underworld enforcer and unlicensed boxing powerhouse. His reputation for being a psychopath apparently had no ill effect on his career. In fact, most likely enhanced it. That made Shaw a perfect target in the eyes of the fearless McLean, and it was only a matter of time before the 28-year-old would battle Shaw. Losing his first fight to Shaw due to an obvious lack of conditioning, McLean quickly arranged a rematch.

On that night, McLean systematically destroyed his opponent, punching him so hard in the second round he knocked him out of the ring, disqualifying Shaw. A third match was scheduled to bring these two powerhouses together yet again. The footage that Jamie McLean assembled from these training days gives an amazing insight into the focus that his father had to train seriously and become a legend.

He was known to have lost several fights, although he always maintained that he had never lost a fight "on the cobbles " or outside the ring. In unlicensed matches, he was twice stopped by Cliff Field.

In his autobiography, McLean claimed to have competed in almost 4,000 fights over three decades, and said he won the large majority of these. McLean was also described as a "fixer" and a "minder", meaning a bodyguard , for criminals and celebrities including Mike Reid , Boy George , and the casts of television shows such as EastEnders and The Bill. The album was entitled Lenny Sings.... He claimed "The King meets The Guvnor. He gravitated towards acting after being introduced to an acting agent by his show-business friends Mike Reid and Freddie Starr , for whom he had "minded".

He also made industry connections by "minding" the casts of television shows such as EastEnders and The Bill. Personal life edit This section needs additional citations for verification.

Despite these defeats, McLean claims to have competed in almost four thousand fights over three decades, and winning a very large majority of these fights. This led many to accept McLean as the unofficial Heavyweight Champion of the World in unlicensed boxing. Other professions With his growing fame, McLean also became known as "The King of Bouncers" around many of the clubs and pubs in London. McLean has also been described as a "fixer" and a "minder" or bodyguard for criminals and celebrities including Mike Reid , Freddie Starr , Boy George , and the casts of television shows such as EastEnders and The Bill. In 1992 McLean decided to release an album of Elvis Presley covers. He claimed "The King meets The Guvnor. McLean also made enemies from years of ejecting people from pubs and clubs.

He suffered two bullet wounds from separate attacks, and was attacked from behind and stabbed on two occasions. McLean has said that he later caught up with and punished one of his assailants, a drug addict named Barry Dalton, who had attempted to shoot McLean at his home while his children were in the house. Dalton had also made many other enemies, and a year later was found dead with a bullet in his head, a murder for which McLean asserted his innocence. McLean immediately protested his innocence, and claimed the police had a vendetta against him because of his association with the Krays. Reportedly, the police had forcefully restrained him with a stranglehold.

Advert Five of the group ended up in hospital. As the remainder of the group recovered in their cells at Snow Hill, Lenny started shouting at them through the slit in his cell door. It was during the filming of Lock, Stock when Lenny fell ill with what was later diagnosed as lung cancer. Email: [email protected].

They could do all the things that MMA master and genius showman Conor McGregor will never be able to do; they were, at the very core of their excesses, two old-fashioned pugilists, they stood up properly, their hands were high and they led with a jab. Hill was a great trainer of boxers, a man revered worldwide for his technique, his tactics and his foul-mouth; Lenny and his boys fit right in. There will never be a boxing match over 12 rounds of three minutes between Floyd Mayweather and McGregor, whose tank dies after about 12 minutes. Alternatively, the fights where boxers have taken their fat bellies into the MMA business have been horrible and hopefully it will never happen again. They might even be contenders. Some of the forgotten heroes of what was a very important scene died before their fifties McLean was 49 and they often walked away from the ring battered, shattered and poor, just like the bare-knuckle boxers they followed, resembled and adored.

Why did Lenny McLean suffer violent rages? There were times I hated him and I looked at him like he was a bully. He always looked like he had the world on his shoulders. We had so many issues. We just had these rowing matches and I hated him because of his attitude. I probably could have helped him.

Reportedly, the police had forcefully restrained him with a stranglehold. Acting career McLean was featured prominently in a television documentary on nightclub security staff, titled Bounce: Behind The Velvet Rope. He gravitated towards acting after being introduced to an agent by two long-term show-business friends, Mike Reid and Freddie Starr , for whom with Archie Mills he had "minded," and also after "minding" the cast of television shows such as EastEnders and The Bill. He was subsequently diagnosed with pleurisy , although further X-ray examination proved he was suffering from lung cancer which had metastasized to his brain. He died shortly afterward on 28 July 1998, in Bexley , London, [2] a few weeks prior to the release of the film. Director Guy Ritchie dedicated the film to him and had billboards for the film changed to feature McLean in tribute. Lenny McLean film In his autobiography, McLean recounts that various film studios had expressed an interest in making a film based on his life and career in unlicensed boxing. McLean wanted Craig Fairbrass to portray him as he had known the actor for some time and also considered that Fairbrass resembled himself as a younger man. McLean travelled to Hollywood, California, to discuss the matter with film studio executives, but their preference for Sylvester Stallone for the part caused McLean to discontinue negotiations. Meanwhile, rugby star Lawrence Dallaglio , actor Ray Winstone and pop star Phil Collins also showed interest in the role. One supposed film promoter, later found to have been a conman, took more than a million pounds from McLean and disappeared. World Wrestling Entertainment wrestler William Regal said in a television interview that he had been offered the role, but this has never come to fruition.

Lenny McLean: Why ‘The Guv’nor’ Was The Toughest Man in Britain

The fight lasted one round with George Langley being victorious via KO. McLean, who in his prime was six feet two inches 188 cm tall and weighed over twenty stone 127 kg , boasted that he could beat anybody, in either a legitimate match or in an unlicensed match with or without gloves, and reputedly sent out challenges to many of the famous boxers of the day, including Muhammad Ali and Mr. T, though neither contest materialised. He was challenged by the king of the gypsies Bartley Gorman to see who was the hardest unlicensed fighter in the United Kingdom but he refused, leading many to believe Bartley to be the better fighter. McLean declined to fight Pearce at that time in his career. McLean lost to Shaw once via verbal submission, which McLean justified by claiming his gloves had been tampered with, thus reducing their maneuverability. McLean beat Shaw in a rematch with a dramatic first-round knockout in which Shaw was knocked out of the ring.

However, McLean was not invincible nor a trained professional athlete and large portions of his career cannot be verified. Despite these defeats, McLean claims to have competed in almost four thousand fights over three decades, and winning a very large majority of these fights.

Men like Lenny McLean and Roy Shaw were direct descendants of the bare-knuckle boxers from the 18th and early 19th century. They were grizzled men with faces altered forever by punishment and noses that looked like they had been attached by a cartoonist. Recommended McGregor fuels further speculation of Mayweather showdown Shaw and McLean were also men that could fight on the floor, wrestle for their life, avoiding the vicious fighting shortcuts, like gouging, elbows and general strangulation, in brawls against other violent men. They were skilled in all the fighting arts, a misnomer that makes me chuckle and Meryl Streep mad, long before the mixed martial arts fraternity attached their desperate dignity to chokes, hitting unconscious men and the breaking of arms. The pirate lords of the 70s scene might just be the missing link in the relentless debate between MMA and boxing. Shaw and McLean could box, they had mastered the sweet science in prison cells or during sessions at makeshift gyms at scrap metal yards in vanished pits in both south, east and north London.
