While it comes to an abrupt end before the story can truly get going, Inside is one of the most memorable games of 2016 that can be played in a single afternoon.

The Forest is a wide open sandbox survival horror game, which is a pretty cool combination. You collect different resources to build a shelter, cook, and craft weapons and traps. All the while, a tribe of creepy mutant cannibals is hunting you. The Forest was released in 2014 on Steam and remains a pretty strong horror game even two years later.

With Jonathan Blow’s The Witness and Hyper Light Drifter, we’ve already seen the releases of two of the year’s most anticipated indie games, but don’t worry: there are plenty more to come. It uses a light-hearted aesthetic to create a beautiful atmosphere that fits perfectly with the theme (heh) of the game. I’m not sure I trust any major players to re-ignite the love of theme park sims, but I believe that this indie team can do exactly the right thing!

His follow-up project is a first-person mystery adventure based around a ship belonging to the East India Company in the year 1808. It is being directed by Jonathan Blow, who may better be known as the man behind the 2008 indie smash-hit, Braid. Blow began working on The Witness in 2009, and after seven years of development it is finally close to release. The visuals look stunning and the so-far ambiguous backstory is certainly contributing to what looks to be a very unique and interesting experience.
